Gate Automation: Is It Better To Convert An Existing Gate Or Buy A New Automatic Gate?

1

If you like the thought of having automated gates in your driveway, you might be wondering whether it is possible to have your existing gates automated, or whether you need to install new gates. In this article, we will offer the homeowner useful information on this topic, with the aim of helping you make the right decision.

Converting Existing Gates To Automatic Opening & Closing

In many cases, this is possible, especially if the gate or gates are light and sturdy and the best way to find out would be to go to an automatic gate installer. It is usual for the motor mechanism to be fitted below ground level, as this looks neater than having the motor above the ground. Of course, if a conversion is feasible, then costs will be much lower than if you replaced the gate(s) and with a coat of paint, your existing gates will look like new. It is often the case where the supporting posts must be changed, as they are not designed for the extra weight that electric gates possess.

Weight Factor

The gross weight of the gate would also determine whether or not it can be converted to electric automation and the heavier the gate, the less chance there is that it can be converted. Consult with an automatic gate installer in the UK  or in your area if you live in another country for the right course of action, as they would be able to assess your existing gating. The existing gates do need to be in good working order, otherwise you are advised to have a bespoke set of gates made to fit the aperture. You can choose from steel, aluminium, hardwood or even wrought iron, or a combination of these.

Wooden Or Masonry Posts

If your existing gates are secured to wooden or masonry posts, these would have to be replaced by steel posts in order to take the extra weight of electric gates and if you have to go to the trouble of doing this, it would be wiser to have new gates made to measure.

Installing New Gates

Of course, this would be the best solution, although the existing gates might be suitable for a conversion, and the best solution is to contact a leading gates supplier and let them pop round and survey the site. The contractor would make you aware of the pros and cons of both options, should there be a choice, then it is up to you to decide on the best course of action.

It is worth noting that existing gates might not look suitable when converted to automation and it is only when you find out the cost of both alternatives that you can make an informed decision.

In some cases, it is not possible to automate existing gates, especially if they are old and in poor condition and should you be in any doubt and would like an expert opinion, call a leading gates supplier who would be happy to pop round and offer their professional opinion.
